Dear Ms Laurie I liked your article in Richmond and was appalled by the behaviour of the parents. Why should not clubs and schools make a rule that if any parent gets a "red card", his or her child will not be allowed to play football in the next match. Hi guys I'm just writing to let you know that I thoroughly enjoy reading the Richmond Magazine online. It's so easy to view the articles and read through the back issues and it even saves paper. I particularly like the child's play features and the local news. The transition to the web has been performed in a very easy to read, informative and logical fashion. I liked your article on flying but in it you say that 70% of people flew to Spain and the like each year – I thought that half the population did not fly anywhere one year to the next and richest 10% did half the air miles. I suspect that you know more than you say in your article. Much is said about air travel causing pollution and, indeed, there is a problem with it. However, most environmental economists agree that the best way of dealing with global warming is to introduce a carbon tax – applicable to the amount of global warming each activity causes. So cows would be taxed too. The odd thing is that if such a tax were introduced air travel would not be hit that much at first (nor would car travel) – it would home and office heating that would be effected. The reason is that air and car travel already pay a tax whereas heating pays none. Indeed, home heating is subsidised with reduced VAT. The surprising thing is that if the government said it was going to introduce a 5% tax on climate change gases in five year’s time, the amount of CCG would decrease by that amount in the five years. Industry is waiting to make the changes they are just waiting to be given the lead by government. The biggest problem, apart from the politics, which you mention, is that the people least able to make the changes tend to be the poorest. The people of Surrey would, in general, be able to make the changes faster than the tax increased. Good luck with your articles – I look forward to the next one. Continued... Letter by Andrew Davis

Whilst I agree with the general sentiment expressed in Sarah Tucker's article, the reality is that any form of taxation that is dressed up as "climate changing" will do nothing of the sort. They are just another deceitful way of extorting money from an already over-taxed population. The real truth of the matter is that absolutely nothing that any politician or indeed, any individual does or will do will make an iota of difference to the problems that mankind is facing unless they also happen to be a scientist. For it is scientists who will get us all out of this mess, as surely as they are the ones who precipitated it in the first place. So, don't give me "eco-taxes", instead, give all the support you can to the scientists who are working to solve those knotty little problems like nuclear fusion that genuinely will save the planet for future generations. Dear Sir, Following the publication of the above article about our new venture, we couldn't pull our children away from the computer all weekend. They were so consumed with watching all the new members joining 'sellthingslocally' , it was touch and go as to whether or not homework would be completed on time! They were even having competitions as to how many new members there would be before bedtime –great fun! On behalf of Adrian and myself thanks very much indeed for a hugely positive article. I particularly liked the way you worked the Peter Rabbit story, threading it into people's subconscious. Is it really neccessary to send a stuffed toy half way round the world? My wife and I visited Argentina in 2004 on a private trip for one month and covered the whole of the country. Your piece captures the spirit of the country and the people perfectly and reminds us of the wonderful time we spent there - you have made us wish to go back. Smoking	25 July 2007
All over the borough people are standing outside various premises smoking. This looks disgusting and it is a health hazard as we are forced to breath in smoke as we enter almost every building. Commuting Blues	04 July 2007
It's all very well banning smoking on stations but I am dissapointed that the rail authorities did not take advantage of the times to introduce other restrictions. Eating and drinking on trains is disgusting and offensive to other passengers. Special noise restrictions should apply in most carridges to include mps players, telephones and usless information from the train operator reminding us that we are in danger of being blown up at any second. Large back packs and bikes should be banned for the security and comfort of other passengers ...... the 8.32 to Waterloo is so crowded that it would affect the sanity of a judge. Continued...
