Godalming retains much of its charm from bygone days, and is a shopping hub dotted with many independent retailers, such as Custard Clothing on the High Street which sells organic and fair trade children’s clothing, intermingled with high street chains such as Boots and Halfords. Shoppers visiting the town will find anything from shoes, watches, jewellery, fine art, books, gifts, stationery, music, guitars, computers, photography, pine furniture, antiques, flowers, hardware, food of all sorts and household goods as they trawl the streets.
In addition there is a market every Friday, and the annual Godalming Food Festival comes to town every July.
In 1300, Godalming was granted the right to hold a weekly market and an annual fair, which took place on the site of the 19th Century town hall nicknamed ‘The Pepperpot’ due to its cupola. Once again, this site has become a marketplace, selling fresh produce. Amylou’s, an independent greengrocer, has joined forces with other local traders from the Godalming Food Festival to create a mini fresh produce market to be held on the second and fourth Saturday of every month.
